Yambio Urban water and Sanitation Company Limited (YUWASCO Ltd)
Background
German Government has been assisting the Government of Republic of South Sudan in developing strategies for reconstruction and development of the Country.
German has supported the water sector since 2006 through technical and financial cooperation, mainly through GIZ and KFW. The support started in Juba at national level, Yei, Yambio and then Torit.
The development of Local water utility in Yambio -Yambio Urban water and Sanitation Company Limited (YUWASCO Ltd) was legally established on July 29, 2013 and it started operation on Nov.1, 2013 being assisted by GIZ, the major investment of water and sanitation infrastructure development is funded by the Federal Republic of Germen and the Public of Finland.
The main objective of YUWASCO is to provide sustainable and safe water supply, sanitation service to the population of Yambio Municipality.

MISSION STATEMENT
- Meet the needs of our customers by offering sustainable water and sanitation company;
- Support health and hygienic lifestyles through supplying safe water and encouraging good sanitation practice;
Equip our staff with the skills, knowledge and motivation to meet the challenge of fulfilling our customers ‘expectations.
- Constant supply of safe and clean drinking water to the population of Yambio Town through water kiosks and tank delivery have significantly reduced water borne disease which used to be very high such as typhoid, warms and diarrhoea.
- Shortage of water during dry season in the Town has been minimized and people have access to clean water throughout the year.
- Equipment of one of the bore hole with high yield has enable YUWASCO to meet the demand of its customers adequately.
- Drilling and equipping of additional 2 boreholes in Ikpiro by Oxfam funded by GIZ REBASE 2021 with a total yield of 19m3 per hour
- Upgrading of 4 boreholes to Hybrid power system of solar and generator interchangeably. This has increase water supply capacity of from 11 m3 per hour to 28m3.
- Promotion of hygiene through sales of clean jerry cans has improved water storage at household level.
- The time and long distance covered by women in search water has been reduced.
- KFW investment through Unicef is almost 90 percent to be completed, that include laying 37km pipelines, construction of 31 kiosks, drilling of 3 boreholes and 2 storage tanks with capacity of 100m3 each
- Inflation and devaluation of local currency has greatly affected the utility operation; cost of operation and maintenance has gone 20 times higher than the previous year’s thus the utility cannot meet all its cost from its revenue.
- Fuel cost and shortage ;the utility operations greatly depend on use of fuel for production and distribution of water but most of time when there is shortage of fuel in the town the production is affected hence the local people will have no water in that period.
- Lack of enough facilities or infrastructure to supply water to the people that has greatly impact the revenue collection .
- Insecurity, there have been constant insecurity in the state since 2016 to April 2017 which also affected the utility where theft cases and breaking into office premises has occurred often. On the same note the army or military police guarding the market have been taking water for free and harassing utility staff when there is no fuel.
